Walking through 2019 Successfully
Welcome to the last day of 2018!
A lot of people say that 2018, to put it mildly, has been a disaster. While I agree it’s been a tough year, I recall feeling just the same way this time last year about the year 2017.
Now, yes 2018 has been a tough year, but as a matter of fact, there were actually a lot of good things that happened this year. Consider these:
- You are still able to read this. That makes you one of very few that are able to read and write, and afford data for your device.
- The Super Falcons (Nigeria’s female football team) defeated South Africa to win the 2018 edition of the Africa Women Cup of Nations. This is the 9th time they would win. What’s more? They would be representing Africa at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
- This is the first Christmas season in many many many years I can recall that there wasn’t fuel scarcity in my beloved Nigeria, thus making travels and indeed the holidays relatively stress free.
- The Naira remained relatively stable all through the year. Naira to US$ was N364 in January 2018 and still same N364 now. Naira actually appreciated over the British pounds from N512 in January 2018 to N463 now. For me personally, that is a huge positive going by my expenditures, even as I wish it would go back to N265:£1 of few years ago. The stability though helps business and aids planning.
- You survived all the crisis, all the painful moments, all the lonely times. You are alive on December 31, 2018. Many have not been so privileged.
- Some would fight me for this. Manchester United has moved up The English Premier League table with 9 points from its last three matches of 2018, scoring 12 goals in three matches, a big departure from when “the special one” was in charge 🤣.
But, if you're still not convinced that 2018 was not so bad, don't worry about it. It will soon be over. 2018 will soon be in your past. Turn your attention to the brand new 2019 year. Note however, that it too will come with its own share of anxieties, fears, failures, successes and accomplishments.
Regardless of your experience in 2018, I have a few tips for you for walking through the year 2019 successfully.
Walking through 2019
- Learn to commit to a cause greater than yourself. It is never about us, it is about Him who created you and I, each for a particular purpose. Find it and live on purpose.
- Learn to value people rather than things. There is tremendous power in relationship. We all need other people to become the best of who we are. You can’t build good relationships with people you do not value or love.
- Restore broken or weak relationships. Start by asking the other person what you can do to make the relationship better. Yes, this requires you to rise above your ego or emotions, even if you’re the wronged party.
- Learn to give thanks for and use what you have instead of complaining about what you don't have. It is not what you don’t have that limits you, it is what you have but don’t know how to use.
- Learn to celebrate the ordinary so you can find joy in life's daily pleasures. Be thankful for simply being alive. Be thankful for your senses as still able, the sense to smell, to see, to touch, to hear, to speak, to move your body parts, to eat and have the food digest well etc.
Worry, depression and anxiety would not make the days go any faster than they would as created by God. Worse still, depression and worry would not enable you to think of a solution. It is counter productive.
In 2018 what I thought was the worst that could happen to me led to the best part of my life so far.
You see, when the wave hits us, we have a choice... allow it to crush us, or learn from it and ride it to a positive future. We all truly can move forward with determination and faith that our best days are ahead.
With these tips, I pray that your walk through 2019 would be most rewarding for you and through you, for all that come in contact with you.
