Signs You May Be In A Toxic Relationship With Your Job!

I bet your reference to toxic relationships is with a friend, a family member or significant other. While those are predominant, it’s also possible to be in a toxic relationship with your job. For many people actually, their identify and sense of value often get caught up in their job and title.

A toxic relationship with ones job goes beyond just being unhappy with the job. It is more to do with one feeling stuck in a setting that can have serious implications on their mental health.

“Now, at work just as in all of life, there would be disagreements with colleagues based on life your varied experiences and perspectives, and there is nothing wrong with that.

However, where many of the situations described below are present, you should reevaluate your long term relationship with the company.

  1. When you’re consistently unhappy in the morning knowing you have to go to work.
  2. When you feel unappreciated at work.
  3. When you're silenced, not allowed to express yourself, or use your skills/talents at work.
  4. When your self esteem is degraded repeatedly.
  5. When you can't point at any reasonable personal benefit derived from where you work.
  6. When you are unable to make out time for your self care.
  7. When it appears you're giving over 70% in return for 30% or less from your organisation.
  8. When you constantly need to walk on eggshells in the office.
  9. When your organisation’s culture is at variance with your personal values and beliefs.
  10. When you feel generally unfulfilled with the work you do.

If you are experiencing most of these symptoms in your place of work, the best thing you can do is to leave. While I acknowledge that leaving may not be immediately possible due to your economic situation, you should at least start to look elsewhere.

While you are searching, assess your main problem areas at work now and explore how you can overcome them. You can try to share your predicament with someone you report to (if you trust the person), or share with your HR department, or perhaps someone trustworthy outside your organisation that can guide you through.

Either way, remember that you need a healthy, positive, and fulfilling work environment for you to be truly creative, successful and happy in life.
