Staff Performance and Promotion, an adaptation from E-Votional with ayodaniels

Chuan and Jing joined a wholesale company together just after graduation. Both worked very hard.

After several years, the boss promoted Jing to Senior Sales Executive but Chuan remained a Sales Executive.

One day Chuan could not take it anymore. He tendered his resignation to the boss and complained that the boss did not value hard working staff, but only promoted those who flattered him.

The boss knew that Chuan worked very hard for the years he’d spent at the company, but in order to help Chuan realize the difference between him and Jing, the boss set Chuan a task.

“Go and find out if anyone is selling water melon in the market?”

Chuan returned and said yes there is someone.

The boss asked how much per kg? Chuan went back to the market to ask and returned to inform boss the $12 per kg.

The Boss told Chuan, I will ask Jing the same question, pay close attention to his response.

Jing went, returned and said, boss, there is only one person selling water melon. The cost is $12 per kg and $100 for 10 kg. He has inventory of 340 melons. On the table there were 58 melons, with each one weighing about 15 kg. They were purchased from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red with good quality.

Chuan was very impressed and realized the difference between himself and Jing. He decided not to resign but to learn from Jing.

Promotion or career progression is not a right, and several factors are taken into consideration by management before someone gets a promotion. To be successful in the Marketplace, you must be observant, think more, have a holistic perspective and go the extra mile.

As an entrepreneur with diverse people working with me, this story is personal, as I am occasionally accosted with same accusation of falling for eye service staff many times. While being human, some element of that may be true, this story brings home my approach to work and rewards in the main. "Hard Work" is nothing if value is not being added in an impactful way, as measured through clear mutually agreed parameters and benchmarks.


So, I urge you to work with a better approach to your work / business.
