Vanity Upon Vanity - Slow Down

The picture below is said to be that of a rich man in the 50s who built the first mud story building in his village. He went on to buy a Volkswagen Beetle car and was the envy of the entire village and surrounding towns.

Today, that house is abandoned, unfit for any human habitation while the vehicle even if available brand new would not attract much if any attention. Sadly, many continue to go to any length, mortgaging their soul, health, family and relationships to acquire things that are temporal and fade away quickly.

I recall paying N50,000 early 2000 to get Econet wireless mobile phone SIM card. These days, a SIM card is obtained free, with starter call credit included as a bonus.

I recall my first prized mobile handset, a Nokia, cherished and celebrated 17 years ago. I won't pay for one today with many improved variants in the market. Even those change now every six months, just look at the Iphone and Samsung series making ones prized possession obsolete even before the cost of the phone is fully recovered from use.

I recall Peugeot 504 GR saloon car or the station wagon variant and the Volkswagen Santana or Passat editions that were the must have vehicles of the middle class and top govenrment officials in the early 80s. Those are not even on the road anymore.

I recall my fathers Grundig Television that came in a wooden cabinet with doors that needed to be opened for viewing and locked back at night. Now Televisions are Plasma, LCD etc and vieweable on mobile devices.

One of the raves of the moment is Adekunle Gold's single “Pick Up” which goes does ...

Baba God o!
Emi nor fe wa Range Rover Dangote olori meji
Na beg i dey beg o
Olorun orun
Pick up the call
Emi nor fe wa Bentley (Mofe wa bentley)
otedola O lori Meji (Pick up the call)

Loosely translated "I also want to drive a Range Rover Dangote does not have two heads ... I also want to drive a Bentley Otedola does not have two heads".

Just like the Volkswagen Beetle, Passat, the Nokia mobile phone, the Grundig Television the Range Rover of today too will soon become obsolete.

A close friend of mine once said, "yes all is vanity, but I would rather get all this things than not have them". True, but having them at ALL costs is the subject of my admonition and thoughts this week.

So again, I say Calm down, don't loose your health, family, dignity, key relationships and ultimately your soul and life in pursuit of things that would pass away, because ALL is Vanity.
